In 1987, the Norfolk and Western and the Southern railroads merged to form Norfolk Southern. In 1999, Norfolk Southern and CSX divided up Conrail between themselves and NS got most of the former PRR lines that were part of Conrail.
After the merger I continued to make trips to Roanoke and Bluefield. Here are a few photos both east and west of Bluefield.
In 1995, my employer opened a satellite facility in Wytheville, VA, so I get to make frequent road trips. Conveniently, Interstate 81 follows the Shenandoah line to Roanoke, the mainline to Radford, and the Bristol Line to Wytheville. How lucky can you get!
Several years ago, on a Wytheville trip, I was scouting for new photo spots and discovered this fantastic spot near Hale’s Gap, VA. I’ve been back several times and it takes my breath away every time. Here are some samples from different times of day and year. I’ll let the pictures uncaptioned, the images speak for themselves.
Here are a few post-Conrail shots on the former PRR Rockville bridge.
